Jonah was as reluctant a prophet as can be found. He resisted his call to preach in Nineveh, home to the Assyrians, the most cruel and vicious people the world had ever known. Jonah preferred their destruction, and literally ran from God. Eventually, unwillingly and half-heartedly, he obeyed, and the people accepted his message. But Jonah sat outside the city, observing and bemoaning the effectiveness of his own preaching! God rebuked him, with the assurance that all must learn Truth and be given an opportunity to respond. We aren’t allowed to choose our calling. Yet let us pray for the revelation of God’s intent for us, and the courage to say, “Here I am. Send me.”
